I’ll be in Berlin in the coming days for a conference entitled “Wohnen: Rebellisch, solidarisch, links” [Housing: Rebellious, solidary, left]. The event is organized by the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung. I’ll present the first results of a research project on Housing and Municipalism. The project compares housing policy responses to the housing crisis in Berlin, Amsterdam, Vienna and […]

New blog post: The political economy of demolition.

I’m reposting a blogpost that discusses the recent rise of demolitions in Vienna. I’m approaching it from a political-economy perspective and situate demolitions within the wider development of Vienna’s housing market since the mid-2000s. The post originally appeared on urbanizm.net. Die politische Ökonomie des Hausabrisses Mit 1. Juli wurde also die Wiener Bauordnung novelliert. Hausabrisse […]

The real estate platform Immobilienscout24.at has published a short report, which was also widely covered in the media. It provides current numbers, but has methodological problems. I’ve written a short post about it on the blog http://www.urbanizm.net. […]

Our symposium on affordable housing at TU Wien.

Last week our institute organized a symposium on the challenge of providing affordable housing in cities at the TU Wien, together with Urban Forum and Österreichische Städtebund. The event was a big success, with more than 150 people attending. The newspaper Wiener Zeitung published an article about the event here: https://www.wienerzeitung.at/nachrichten/wien/stadtleben/950473_Eine-Ressource-fuer-die-Elite.html The program can be […]

New publication: How the real estate industry successfully lobbied Austria’s new government.

I wrote a short piece on the reform plans for housing policy of Austria’s new coalition government. A comparison of the coalition agreement with the most recent press materials of the association of the real estate industry (Verband der Immobilienwirtschaft) shows how successful the industry did their lobbying. Many of their demands are included in […]
